Clearing the mind to see

(for 30 Poems in November fundraiser)

His mind overtaxed with formulas,

Jonas Salk retreated to Umbria.

What clears the mind to see?

Italian hillsides,

Gleaming stone walls,

The geometry of arches and courtyards,

The silence of a basilica.

….

There Salk found what he came to find:

Inspiration, illumination,

The medical solution he’d struggled for.

In the empty spaciousness of the monastery,

in the clear crisp air of Assisi,

….

The end of polio began

…..
